(Born in 1922, Fred Yates grew up near Manchester and became an insurance clerk until going to war in the Grenadier Guards. After the war he returned to Manchester and became a painter & decorator, and taught himself to paint pictures of industrial architecture. He went to art college and won a travelling scholarship to Rome & Florence in 1950. He was a teacher for twenty years and then moved to Cornwall in 1969 and painted full time. His paintings are in many private & public collections including Brighton, Liverpool University, Russell Coates and Torquay Art Gallery)
